Casio SE-C450 Cash Register Review

The Casio SE-C450 cash register replaced the outgoing SE-C300 in the spring of 2013. The SE-C450 – like its predecessor – is a ‘split-keyboard’ cash register, with a raised set of ‘function’ buttons on the left hand side and a flat set of 72 product or department buttons on the right hand side. In addition to this unusual style (cash registers traditionally have either an entirely raised or an entirely flat keyboard) the SE-C450 has several stand-out features. One such feature is the large tilting multi line LCD operator display. The operator screen clearly shows both the price entered and the name of the item or department sold. This makes it very easy for the cashier to spot an incorrect entry before they quote the subtotal to the customer or cash off the sale. The SE-C450 has a review order screen, allowing them to easily void the incorrect line. This cuts down on over rings and the resulting discrepancies in the till takings reports. In addition to the operator display, the pop-up customer rear display is also alpha numeric so the customer can see what items are being rung through giving them confidence that the correct amounts are being rung through the cash register.SE-C450_3500 Buttons

The next advantage of the SE-C450 is the professional, fast, quiet thermal receipt printer. The SE-C450 is flexible enough to use the printer in a variety of ways. So to start with, depending on your business operation, you can set the SE-C450 to work in either receipt or journal mode. In journal mode you are unable to issue customer receipts through the till, but you have an audit of every transaction recorded saved on the take up spool. In the more popular receipt mode you can choose to issue receipts with every transaction, or you can have the receipt function switched off so it is only issued on customer request. The SE-C450 can also be programmed to enable copy or duplicate receipts on request. The receipt header can be customised to include your shop name and promotional details. As with most cash registers you can issue an end of day sales report, in addition to this the SE-C450 also provides the ability to issue a journal report of the days takings (providing you run the report prior to the Z report.

In terms of other cash register features, the SE-C450 has a secure key lock ensuring manager control over reports and programming. The SE-SC450 has 72 buttons on the flat section of the keyboard. These buttons are departments by default, but the cash register can be set up with them as PLUs (individual products). The SE-C450 also supports barcode scanning with up to 2,000 barcode lines.

The SE-C450 has a full size metal cash base. The removable plastic insert has 4 note holders and 8 coin pots – enough to cover the UK denominations. The dimensions of the SE-C450 are 400mm wide x 450mm deep with a height of 220mm. The ‘low-slung’ profile of the Casio SE-C cash register range in general make them popular to retailers who prefer sleek design to the more bulky, traditional style of other manufacturers.

The SE-C45 also has an inbuilt SD card slot, which can be utilised for backing up the cash registers programming – a big advantage should your business utilise multiple tills with the same products – and for extracting your end of day reports into a spreadsheet.

The only limitation we can find on the Casio SE-C450 is the single station thermal printer, but should you need two printers (one for receipts and one for audit) please see our review of the SEC-450’s ‘big brother’ – the SE-C3500. If you are ordering your SE-C450 for a hospitality application (café, restaurant, pub, deli etc.) we would recommend ordering with an additional wet cover for the raised button portion of the keyboard as the manufacturer supplies a cover for the flat portion only.

At the time of writing the SE-S400 is the most competitively priced barcode scanner friendly cash register in the UK, making it the perfect entry level scanning cash register.

Thames luxury charters Ltd run a fleet of floating luxury event venues at the iconic Butlers wharf next to Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast.

They approached Shopstuff Ltd with a view to replacing their ageing Sam4s SER7000 cash registers with a more secure and up to date system.

A review of their full requirements was first established. It was determined that operator accountability and a comprehensive free bar control system were the crucial requirements. The functionality required made the Sam4S touch screen system a ‘no-brainer’.

The first part was established with the use of the dallas key system, with each operator having their own cash draw and with the use of the setting up of multiple misc tend buttons for each operator, allowed for a comprehensive secure system.

As many events can be paid for in full by the companies chartering the boats the customer also wanted a way of being able to give event organisers a live running total of the bar bill, this was established by the use of a Macro button and it being programmed to produce a financial x read which would show the companies client a live bar tab amount with a time stamp.

The Casio SE-S10 cash register has been around for a number of years, more than we have been blogging for at least! It has proved to be an extremely popular cash register over the years and we thought it worthy of a somewhat late review.

The SE-S10 replaced the out-going TE-M80 model in the Autumn of 2010 with its first stand out feature being a full size cash drawer. Five years on it remains the cheapest cash register available in the UK with the full number of coin (8) and note (4) compartments. Not having to mix your coin is an often over-looked feature – having a pot for each coin saves your cashiers time in dispensing change and cuts down on embarrassing change errors.

The next big feature on the SE-S10 is its fast, silent thermal printer. The standard receipt header message can be customised to your requirements. The five lines of text can be personalised with your shop name, address details and or promotional message. Having your receipts personalised adds a level of professionalism and prevents confusion around refunds and exchanges. The cash register is supplied with a take up spool enabling it to be used in journal mode. However, the most popular use is receipt mode. The SE-S10 can only issue one receipt per transaction – this can be automatically done with every sale or only on customer request, but once the receipt has been issued no duplicate is available.

The SE-S10 has five department buttons (with the use of the shift button this can be up to 20), which can each be custom programmed with a description and price. If no preset price is applicable the department button can be left open for variable sales amounts.

The SE-S10 has a number of useful functions including a discount (or surcharge) button, refund mode, single item sale and low battery indicator. The secure key lock ensures manager control over sales reports, refunds and programming. The SE-S10 is also capable of supporting up to 500 PLU’s.

The SE-S10 has a ‘number only’ LED customer and operator display. Both are fixed in position, but it does allow both the operator and customer to see the sales total as each line is entered. The operator display also shows the department number the current transaction line has been assigned to.

As with any cash register that can have it’s printer ‘de-activated’ so it issues receipts and reports only on request, the running costs for the SE-S10 are relatively low. SE-S10 till rolls are available in boxes of 20 for around about the £10-£12 mark depending on how many boxes you order.

The base and cash drawer are of a robust plastic construction and we reckon the register is suitable for any premises requiring a professional cash register capable of processing somewhere in the region of 80 transactions per day. Should your business be processing a higher volume of transactions we would recommend investing in a cash register with a heavy duty metal base. Retailers with busy shops could consider either the Casio SE-S400 or the Sharp XE-A207 cash registers. With both of these tills you also get substantially more detailed reporting, significantly more sales department buttons (16 on the XE-A207 and 25 on the SE-S400), both support SD card use (for exporting sales information to a PC and for backing up the programming information). In addition to this the Sharp XE-A207 is supplied with a onsite warranty.

In summary the SE-S10, after five years on the market, remains a competitive model and we would recommend for any retail premises processing medium volume of transactions, requiring ‘on-request’ receipt issuance. The brightest entry level till on the UK and European market is the Casio SE-G1. The SE-G1 is available in a range of five colours – black, blue, red, pink and white. As well as the funky colours and design the SE-G1 does have some pretty nifty features for a till selling on the web at under £80.

Unrivalled for a cash till at this price the SE-G1 has a fast, silent thermal printer. The SE-G1 can be set up with receipt header message. Up to five lines of text can be programmed allowing you to issue professional looking receipts with your shop name, contact details and advertising. The limitation of the printer is that it cannot be switched off – so you have to issue a receipt with every sale. You can set the SE-G1 to work in journal mode, but this means you loose to ability to issue receipts and you have to remove the take up spool to see the end of day report. Some retailers may find the continual need to print a waste of money. If your premises processing lots of transactions a day and you don’t want the receipt constantly printing we would recommend taking a look at either the SE-S100 or SE-400 Casio cash registers.

The SE-G1 has 8 sales category buttons (departments) for you to allot sales to. This is more than both the Sharp XE-A107 and the Casio SE-S10. The only downside is that the department text is fixed. The receipts still look professional, but it is frustrating that you can edit the receipt header, but not the department text.

The SE-G1 has a LCD operator display and a fixed rear display allowing the customer to view the sales amount.

At 33cm wide, 34.5cm deep (front to back) and 17cm high, the SE-G1 is (to date!) the smallest cash register we have ever sold – making it ideal for small retail businesses, kiosks and pop up shops who are short on counter space. There is an obvious draw back to having such a small foot print and that is the cash drawer size! The cash drawer is very small and light duty having room for only 5 coin types and 3 note types. The coin pots are also very small.

The Casio SE-G1 is a welcome addition to the range of entry level cash registers available to UK retailers – the fact that you can buy a thermal printing cash register with personalised receipt for less than £80 is incredible. However, prospective purchasers need to be aware that there is a limit for what you can get for this amount of money. The SE-G1 would be ideal for a boutique style shop, looking to create a professional, funky image, but not necessarily for retailers processing more than 50 transactions per day.

Casio SE-S100 Cash Register Review

In the spring of 2015 Casio released a brand new cash register model, the SE-S100, to sit neatly in their retail cash register range between the SE-S10 and SE-S400.

The first point of note about the SE-S100 is that it is available in a range of colours. Taking on from their success with the multi-colour basic cash register, the SE-G1, Casio launched the SE-S100 in a choice of black, silver, gold and red. All four tills have the same black base.

Once you’ve chosen the colour that best suits your shop interior its time to look at the key functions. The first instinct is to reckon that the SE-S100  is a SE-G1 on a large base. This would do the new model a great disservice. Like the SE-S10 and SE-S400 the SE-S100 does feature a full size lockable cash drawer with space for all 8 coin types and 4 note holders, but the range of features on the SE-S100 put it far ahead of not only the SE-G1, but also the Sharp XE-A107, and the Casio SE-S10 cash registers.

The SE-S100 has several advantages over these models, making the additional £20-£30 cost over the SE-S10 well worth the investment. First of all the SE-S100 has 12 sales department buttons compared with only 5 on the SE-S10. Each button can be programmed with a description and price (if necessary). When the button is pressed the description and price appears on the receipt and operator display. With the shift key the number of departments is easily increased to 24. There is also a PLU button enabling you to program and sell up to 2,000 different PLU’s.

The thermal receipt printer on the SE-S100 is also a lot faster than other cash registers of this class. Unlike the SE-G1 cash register the receipt on the SE-S100 can be switched off and issued on request. Alternatively, the printer can be set to work in journal (audit) mode, but this would mean that you would be unable to issue any till receipts. As with the SE-S10 the receipt header can be custom programmed with up to 5 lines of text about your business. This is a really useful function for both advertising your business and encouraging repeat custom, but also it prevents non-customers returning items under fake receipts.

The operator and customer displays on the SE-S100 are amazing for a cash register at this price level. The operator display is two line so the most recent entered item is shown on the top line, and the running total on the second line. The fixed customer display is numeric and displays the sales total clearly for the customer to see.

Probably the biggest advantage the SE-S100 has over the SE-S10 and other cash registers of this class, is the SD card back up feature. This allows sales data to be uploaded from the till and viewed on a PC. Moreover, if you have multiple till points once you have programmed your first cash register you can make a copy of the program to your SD card and then use the card to program all the other registers – saving time and money!

The SE-S100‘s are bright, functional easy to use cash registers and for the prices advertised online represent a worthwhile investment to any start up retail business.
